MURRUMBIDGEE Madness is a boat full of New Zealanders.
It sounds like the start of a bad joke, but it is not.
Competing in the MOC Expert class, the crew was the only competing in this year’s edition of the Southern 80 made up entirely of non-Australians.
Skier Gareth Jolly, of Hamilton in the North Island, said he and the crew were proud to be representing the land of the long white cloud.
‘‘Yeah, there are a few of us around, but we’re the only ones with a full crew of Kiwis,’’ Jolly said.
‘‘There’s a crew with an American (Justin Legere), and that boat Mad Kiwis has a few New Zealanders too, but they’re from around here.’’.
Driver Mike Jolly is also from Hamilton, while skier Sam Dunstall, and observer Mike Dunstall hail from Taupo on the North Island.
Gareth laughed as he said he would not be drawn on why the boat was named Murrumbidgee Madness rather than something more close to home.
‘‘Oh no, no. We just wanted to fit in, but it turns out we’re at the back of the line anyway,’’ he joked.
Murrumbidgee Madness finished eighth in the MOC Expert class with a time of 44 minutes, 44 seconds.
